BEFORE THE CRASH
- As a child, he watched his parents die in a murder/suicide after they were swindled out of their life savings by Sawyer, a confidence man who seduced his mother
- Had an uncle who died of a brain tumor
- Lived with numerous foster families and possibly his grandparents, likely on his mother's side
- Dropped out of school in 9th grade
- Beginning at age 19, when he owed someone $6,000, he became a con man himself and adopted the name and methods of the man he holds responsible for his parents' deaths
- Keeps a letter that he wrote as a child and hopes to one day deliver to the original Sawyer
- Obsessed with hunting down the original Sawyer for revenge
- Tricked into killing a man, Frank Duckett, that he thought was the original Sawyer, but was actually only a debtor to his informant, Hibbs.
- Encountered Jack's father, Christian Shephard, in an Australian bar, who encouraged him to kill Duckett. When he encounters Jack after a flash-back and hears Jack repeat a sentence his father used to say, Sawyer realises that Christian is Jack's father, but does not tell Jack this.

ON THE ISLAND

- In Kate's words, he "wants to be hated" (i.e., he is filled with self-loathing over what he has become - a con man)

- Bought his way onto raft with hoarded supplies
- Before leaving on the raft tells Jack about his encounter with Jack's father

- Recovers remarkably quickly from his gunshot wound. According to the Timeline, he was shot on Day 44 and is near death from infection when he reaches Jack on Day 48. 15 days later, in “Dave”, he appears fully healed from the wound.
- Hurley attacked him after he played a joke on him about his mental condition and was saved by Jin. He calls Hurley "crazy" while he walks off.
- In S.O.S. appears to be building a hut to replace the tent trashed in his fight with Hurley.
