The characters Scott Jackson and Steve Jenkins are frequently confused on the Island, one of them is dead and people are still having difficulty deciding which of the two it is! They were seen together once, then one was killed. So far, all of the characters keep getting them mixed up as they did at the very begining.

Scott and Steve have always been confused; whether it was intentional in the beginning or not the writers kept it as a running joke. The humor of the joke is that NO ONE - not even people that never met them... and not after one of them is dead - can tell Scott and Steve apart. Weeks after one of them died, people on the island are STILL getting it wrong. The writers put it in there because they knew die-hard LOST fans would giggle.

According to transcripts and overall continuity, Scott is dead and Steve is alive and well.

Carlton Cuse and Adam Horowitz have confirmed that Scott is dead and Steve is alive (Carlton Cuse and Adam Horowitz interview with E!). It should be mentioned though that Dustin Watchman, the actor who has been credited as Scott Jackson, has continued to appear on Lost as an extra in Season 2, well after his character Scott is presumed deceased.

• Steve was supposed to say one line in the script, however Christian wasn't around that day, so they plucked Dustin out of the cast of extras to give the line. Since the script was not changed to reflect who actually said the line, Dustin was officially credited as playing Steve in that episode (since he spoke Steve's line), but for every other episode, he has played (and is still playing) Scott. • In the episode The Moth the characters identify themselves individually. The character that is buried in Homecoming is the one who identifies himself as Scott during The Moth

Interview with Carlton Cuse & Adam Horowitz

JG: Okay, here's a big question: Scott was eulogized, but rumor has it that it was actually Steve that was killed, even though Hurley apologized for calling Scott Steve. Which one is really alive?

CC: I have no idea.

JG: That's your official executive producer answer? You have no idea?

AH: We actually have a notecard on the board in the room that says "Scott is dead, Steve is alive."

CC: Yes.

AH: We'd lost track.

CC: Scott's dead, Steve's alive.

Theories

• Though a persistent rumor that Steve is the one who is dead. It is Scott who is dead and it is yet to be seen if Steve comes to the foreground.
