Oldvsnewfilm — Dr. Marvin Candle in the Swan Orientation Film.

Mark Wickman redirects here. It is another name revealed in 2x21 ?, and this character's true name is not yet known.

Theories

Marvin Candle, and Ray Mullen lost their arms in the Incident, and Montand in the Dark Territory.
- Perhaps they (and possibly more, perhaps the DeGroots?) were standing either side of something which exploded, hence the Chernobyl-style concrete and thick doors
- The loss of their arms could have been the result of the Sickness, the incident being when they were not properly treated
  - This would be consistent with the mention of Meningococcal disease, which can cause the need for amputated limbs in survivors.
Interestingly, Dharma is an anagram for "had arm". However, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have confirmed that "DHARMA" is not an anagram, but an acronym.
He might also be related to Montand. Rousseau claims that Montand lost his arm in the Dark Territory. Rousseau says that "Montand lost his arm" shortly after the arrival of her research team. This was sixteen years ago, which would put Montand / Candle / Wickman on the island in 1980, the date of both the Orientation video and film for stations three and five. The timing also coincides with the birth and abduction of her daughter Alex.
- Might Candle / Wickman be just that - an actor? The idea of acting has definite relevance to Mr. Friendly's fake beard, as does not going by his "real" name. Were the orientation videos filmed on the island itself, or on sets elsewhere?
The glass eye may belong to him.
It seems as though he goes by "M. Flame" in the videos, being "Candle" and "Wickman". Likely related to The Flame.
Marvin Candle and Mark Wickman are twins. (And one of them is a Bad Twin.)
- If they are twins, they may either experience different hand-dominance and be mirror twins, or only one may have a prosthetic arm. The mirror-twin theory also ties back to the Bad Twin novel.
- They are Conjoined twins that were surgically separated, leaving Marvin with no left arm.
Could he have been a former lostie with a handicap who was "healed" by the island and became a member of the Dharma team?
The prosthetic arm was just a dramatic device to lend credence to the "incident" and further the urgency of pushing the button at the Swan.

The Dharma Iniative/Hanso Foundation grew his arm back.
The Pearl Orientation Video was recorded *BEFORE* The Swan Orientation Film, meaning he lost the arm in some sort of incident. (The Pearl video was dated 1980, and the map on the Swan's blast door indicated something happened on October 28, 1985.) However, the copyright date of The Swan film is *also* 1980.
- The reason most people assume that the Swan video is older is because it is on film instead of video tape. However the powerful magnetic field in the Swan makes non-magnetic media an attractive choice for movies in that location.
The 'work' being done in the Swan and recorded in the Pearl was something other than pressing the button (seeing as something happened in 1985).
If the people who are to push the button are being monitored for an experiment, Wickman might be posing as a character called Marvin Candle to give the people good reason to push the button.
Marvin Candle was himself a subject of the Life Extension Project and not only gets younger, but had his arm cloned and reimplanted.
Marvin Candle as Dr. Waxman was the man Kate and Sawyer shot when Kate realized their group was being followed.
